Summer time and Strawberries

I bought a two pound box of strawberries for $2.00 yesterday. It was a fantastic deal. They were the typical store bought strawberries. Genetically engineered, it took at least two bites to finish each and the red stopped just underneath the green leaves on top. Most of them had the one or two camel hump thing going as well. Except for this one berry. This one cute little berry that was such a freak because it was so normal looking.

Growing up we had strawberry bushes growing in sporadic clumps in our back yard. They’d be hiding under a random bird of paradise, tucked away behind a rose bush, surrounding one of the fruit trees in the orchard. I’m not even sure if anyone had really planted them there on purpose or if they just were.

They didn’t bloom often, or much, and the berries they produced were tiny little things that were a deep red all the way through. Often bugs would tunnel through before we had a chance to harvest them. But, every once in a while, our diligence would pay off and we would be lucky enough to find one untouched.

They tasted like summer time.
